They are then covered in heated lacquer into which glass beads and small mirror decorations are inserted by hand. Women do the fine detail work. The inspiration is Diwali, the Festival of Lights, a Hindu celebration of the New Year. It signifies new beginnings. Lacquer handicrafts are typically made by subsistence farmers in the off season for extra household income.
